Description

A fabulous pair of late 19thC Royal Doulton Lambeth stoneware bottle neck vases c1895. Each base bears a stamp for Doulton Lambeth England and date manufacture number 8413. Each base also bears the inscribed initials MB. These vases can be attributed to Maud Bowden, the long serving Doulton Lambeth artist who assisted the renowned artist Harry Simeon.

The vases have bulbous bases divided into three panels of raised scrolling decoration in pale greens, against a rich cobalt blue background. The panels have beaded definition at the top. Above and below the pedestal bases and bottle necks are glazed in a very unusual naturalistic glaze of ambers and darker browns to give the appearance of a natural material like tortoiseshell or a scagliola (imitation marble) popularly used in the 18thc and 19thC to decorate architectural columns. The top of the necks is decorated with a dark blue beaded band. The vase tops and interiors are glazed in rich cobalt blue.

These vases are in perfect condition, no damage or old repairs at all. The dark brown patches in the pattern in the glazing on one bottle neck is more evident than on the other bottle neck - not surprising in such a free form glazed effect the artist intended.
