Small Bronze 'Starter's' Bell with Chain Attachment

1900 - 1920
Description

Circa 1910-1930 a heavy and well made bronze bell with the original clapper and a length of chain at the top with a locking link to secure it to a fixing and a length of chain at the bottom holding the original handle. It weighs 2.2kgs.

The bell itself measures 15cm in height and approximately 12.5cm in diameter at the open end. It is thought to be a 'starter's bell' used in racing of all types, but we cannot confirm it.

The heavy, barrel shaped clapper is original and has a deliberately designed grove around the lower part giving the bell a particularly nice sound. It has a small iron link at the bottom securing the chain and original wooden handle.
