This is an unusual antique Welsh marches George III oak provincial bureau, circa 1810, decorated with folk art inlay, incorporating a comprehensive interior, in excellent original condition. Originating from the market town of Ludlow on the Welsh border, we believe this bureau to be of Welsh marches provenance. The bureau is in excellent working order, constructed with a scribe moulded solid oak frame, with an oak fall. The centre and corners of the fall is decorated with folk art inlay detail, featuring circular patterned oak dots. The fall also retains the original brass hinges and original brass working lever lock (with key). The fall opens to reveal a complete and original interior, comprising of 6 internal drawers, featuring turned wooden knobs. A central ‘cubby hole’ is also present, behind a cross-banded door with working lock and key. The interior also comprises 6 pigeon hole slots. The fall is supported by the original two moulded pull-out slides, with old replacement turned wooden knobs. Below the fall is a bank of four graduated drawers. The drawers are oak lined, boasting moulded and oak cross-banded fronts, and boast the original oak turned wooden knobs and original key escutcheons, along with original steel lever locks (all with working keys). The fall retains its original working brass lever lock, with working key. The bureau features clean oak and pine backboards and is raised on a shaped and moulded plinth, supported by bracket feet.

Condition Report:
Nominal old use marks to the top, leading edges, fall, interior and inside of drawers, but nothing significant, considering the age of the item. The bureau has been wax-polished by hand, to a professional standard, in our workshop, therefore the colour and patination are to an excellent standard. The fall opens easily with no significant warping, which is common with bureaus of this age. The interior is dry and clean, with nominal old use marks. The original brass fall hinges are in good working condition. The fall retains its original working brass hinges and original steel lever locks, with working key. The drawers retain their original pine linings, turned knobs and brass escutcheons and original locks, with working key. The bureau retains its original backboards and is raised on a moulded plinth, terminating on its bracket feet. This Georgian bureau is solid in joint and ready to use.
