Mid 19thc Cut Lead Crystal Mallet Decanter C1860

19th century
Description

A handsome mid 19th hand blown and cut lead crystal mallet decanter c1860. The shape is known as mallet shape due to the tall neck and stopper above a concave undulating body below. The concave body is divided by protruding columns, also concave, each cut with graduated semicircles. This makes for an excellent grip when pouring. The columns continue under the base to form a a petal shape around the pontil, which is smooth. The shoulder is slice flat cut on each side of each column, rising to a stepped ring at the base of the neck, and the neck itself is cut with ovals. The stopper, which is original, repeats the column theme, also centring on a smooth pontil. A detail is that the outer point of each curving column on the stopper, is cut with a small oval - no doubt also to ensure a good grip. Really, I think it is an amazing work of hand blown glass, a robust handsome piece weighing 1.640kg! And due to its design, it has been able to stand the test of time, as it’s condition is perfect.
