Description

A beautiful mid 19thC watercolour of a Scottish lakeside scene surrounded by mountains by Thomas Charles Leeson Rowbotham (1823-1875). The scene is ethereal and calm, with the misty mountains suggesting the early start of a crisp sunny day of undisturbed peace in the Scottish highlands. The watercolour uses body colour throughout, giving the picture a bright and lustrous appearance and this artist was known for this technique. It is signed bottom left. It has a new mount and new glazing within its original frame.

Thomas Charles Leeson Rowbotham was a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and succeeded his father as Professor of Drawing at the Royal Naval School. His work was much admired by Ruskin. He published a number of books of his drawings and sketches and his studio sale was held at Christie’s on 21 April 1876, after his death.
