Antique Silver Snuff Box - Recumbent Cow

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: The Silver Cabinet

This wonderful solid sterling silver snuff box dates from the beginning of the reign of Queen Victoria.

It is hallmarked on the side for Sheffield 1838 and shows the duty mark as the head of William IV, as the marks had not yet been updated for the new queen. The maker''s mark is for Henry Wilkinson & Co.

The cow''s body is beautifully moulded in repose. The base opens to a well-gilded interior for snuff. There are a couple of dents (or they could be the shape of the cow) but they don''t detract from a very unusual and collectable item.
