Description

An impressive pair of mid 19thC good quality brass candlesticks dating to c1850. They may be French or English, in my view most likely English from the early Victorian or William IV era. The tapered columns are surmounted by square urns on pedestals, with wide square footed bases. The sides of the urns are decorated in relief with lion’s heads. The sides of the tapered columns are decorated in relief with the head of a classical figure or god, above a trailing vine and grapes. The bases are decorated in relief with scrolls and vine leaves, and the intersecting parts of the columns have gadrooned edges. As the decoration is in relief, the back panels have antiqued with age to a pleasing verdigris. The bases underneath each have a number 3895 and an oval foundry mark with internal column. The candlesticks are heavy, indicating their quality - weight 665gr each.
