Bathers at the Creek: Mediterranean Cote D'azur Landscape with Figures Circa 1910 Double Sided Oil on Board

1900 - 1920
Description

An atmospheric view of the wild French Cote d'Azur coast on a greyish summer's day, where two small figures at a creek are looking out over the sea. Expertly sketched, it seems to me as if they are if huddled in bathrobes, having just returned from a swim.

On the verso, there is a second mediterranean view, painted probably not far from Agay near Saint Raphael,, to judge by the red cliffs. It is this side that bears the artist's signature, Claudius Félix (born 1875), a French painter who had studied with Carolus Duran. Either side of the artwork could be displayed.

With the oil on board measuring 33.5 x 40 cm, the overall size including the original wood carved frame is 40 x 43 cm.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, French Post-Impressionist landscapes focus on capturing light, atmospheric effects, and expressive brushwork along regions like the Cote dAzur. Artists moved beyond strict naturalism to emphasise structure, vivid colour harmony, and personal painterly gesture.

Artists during this era typically utilised oil pigments bound with linseed oil, applied onto rigid wooden or millboard panels, as well as stretched linen canvas. Board panels were particularly favoured for plein air sketching due to their durability and portability.

Authentic period works show age-appropriate criteria such as natural paint craquelure, oxidisation or darkening on the reverse of the board, and evidence of historical hand-applied gesso or primer layers. Double-sided paintings or plein air studies often display raw paint edges and period framing marks.

Position the artwork above a neutral console table, sideboard, or fireplace mantel to create a refined focal point. Pair the rich earthy tones of the painting with natural wood textures, linen textiles, or contemporary minimalist decor to balance traditional art with modern aesthetics.

Keep the painting away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and heat sources to prevent warping of the board and fading of the pigments. Clean the surface gently using a dry, soft camel-hair brush, avoiding water, chemical cleaners, or commercial polishes.
