A clever piece of sailors work is this very nicely carved fid, which is used to hold open knots and holes in canvas, and to separate the ''lays'' of natural rope for splicing.....it is made of ''marine ivory'' , probably Whalebone and is pointed at one end, ropetwist decoration in the middle and has a carved shaped finial at the top end.......excellent colour and condition.

English / Yorkshire. C1840-60.
