Antique English Victorian Papier-mâché Ladies Jewellery Casket

Description

A most attractive Mid 19th Century Antique English Victorian Papier-mâché Ladies Jewellery Casket in fine original condition, the overall decoration of gilded arabesques inlaid with abalone shell, the rising top still with it's fitted stationery folder intact, the interior retaining it's removable tray, the drawer beneath in good order. Original locks, with key to drawer lock, but not to cabinet lock. Some minor rubbing to the gilded edge decoration and minor wear to some interior silkwork, but otherwise offered in excellent and unrestored condition. No Maker's Marks, but almost certainly produced early in Queen Victoria's reign in Wolverhampton, at that time the manufacturing centre of the English papier-mâché industry.

FAQs

Papier-mache decorative arts reached peak popularity in Britain during the mid-19th century, following technical innovations that allowed paper sheets to be pressed, baked, and lacquered into rigid shapes. Makers such as Jennens & Bettridge produced items ranging from small trinket boxes to large furniture pieces, decorated with shell inlays, gilding, and painted scenes.

These caskets were made from laminated sheets of paper soaked in linseed oil, spirit varnishes, and glue, which were heat-moulded and baked until solid. The surfaces were treated with multiple layers of black asphaltum varnish, inlaid with sliced mother-of-pearl shell, and decorated using gold leaf gilding and paint.

Authentic pieces feature dark, dense lacquer, delicate hand-painted line work, and shell inlays flush with the surface. Original items often display fine surface crazing, slight wear around hinges and edges, and occasionally manufacturer stampings on the base or interior.

Position the casket as a focal decorative accent on a vanity table, bedside cabinet, or hallway console table. Its dark tone and reflective mother-of-pearl inlay contrast well against neutral marble, timber, or painted surfaces.
