Antique Dutch or English Georgian Pewter Coffee Urn

18th century
Description

A rare and fine Early 18th Century Antique Dutch or English Georgian Pewter Coffee Urn in wholly untouched condition, even down to the turned wooden "shoes" which support it's three cabriole legs. Retaining it's original brass spigot complete with removable tap, the Queen Anne pear shaped body and high-domed cover, with matching turned fruitwood and brass finial, all point to this attractive piece having been produced during the Early Georgian period. Unmarked. For a comparable, though more elaborate example in paktong, see Schiffer ~ Page 347 { A }, "The Brass Book", Exton, PA, 1978.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popular during the 18th and early 19th centuries across Northern Europe and Britain, pewter coffee urns served as tabletop vessels equipped with a tap or spigot to dispense hot beverages during formal meals and gatherings.

These vessels were cast from pewteran alloy of tin mixed with copper, lead, or antimonyand constructed with soldered joints, cast handles, brass or bronze spigots, and wooden finials or feet to reduce heat transfer.

Authentic period examples typically display maker touchmarks stamped into the base or rim, cast cabriole leg supports, heavy soldered seams, and natural surface oxidisation acquired over time.

A pewter coffee urn operates effectively as a sculptural accent when positioned on a sideboard top, kitchen island, or mantle, adding historic texture to traditional or eclectic interiors.

Clean the surface gently using a soft, dry cloth to remove dust. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive metal polishes that strip the historic patina, and keep the interior dry to prevent metal degradation.
