French Comtoise Wall Clock

19th century
For Sale by Clockwise
Description

Dating from circa 1870 this eight day striking French Comtoise wall clock is in very good condition. It has the traditional repeat strike function at two minutes past the hour and also original trefoil hands, accompanying a wooden wall bracket for mounting. The brass surround has been carefully restored as has the movement and the dial is in very good condition. Please note the stand in the photos is for display only and the clock comes with my two year guarantee as standard.

Rather than trusting a courier of any sort I unreservedly recommend collection or I can deliver regionally. All antique clocks require delicate handling and specific setting up so it is far better for a dealer to meet a client and talk them through the process, or set the clock up for them, rather than leave the client struggling at the other end on their own.

Declaration

Clockwise has dated this French Comtoise Wall Clock to the 1870s.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Comtoise clocks, also known as Morbier or Jura clocks, originated in the Franche-Comte region of eastern France during the late 17th century. They are characterised by their distinctive embossed metal surrounds, white enamel dials, and heavy internal pendulum mechanisms.

These clocks typically feature a white enamel dial set within a pressed brass or brass repousse decorative surround. The internal clockwork movement is constructed using iron and brass components, often driven by heavy iron weights.

Authentic 19th-century examples feature enamel dials with hand-painted Roman numerals, often showing fine surface crazing from age. The pressed brass fronton typically depicts agricultural scenes, foliage, or historical themes, paired with hand-hammered iron clockworks.

A Comtoise clock face acts as a focal architectural feature when mounted directly on a wall above a console table or mantelpiece. The textured metalwork creates contrast against painted plaster, neutral backdrops, or exposed brickwork.

Clean the enamel dial using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust without disturbing painted numerals. Gently dust the brass surround using a soft brush, avoiding chemical polishes that can remove natural patina, and consult a horologist for mechanical servicing.
