19th century
Description

Stunning Ormolu and Sevres Porcelain Boudoir Clock by Japy Freres.

~ French - Circa 1870 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A fine and stunning original antique French boudoir clock by the famous maker Japy Freres. It is beautifully made of ormolu (fine gilded brass/bronze), finely modelled and chased, and mounted with exquisite Serves style porcelain. Porcelain has a blue ground and is delicately painted with a cherub to the dial and a couple in a country scene in the panel below the dial. The lower panel is finely painted with a floral swag. The porcelain dial and panels are signed by the artist to the reverse .The dial has red 'jewel' half hour markers, beautifully fretted gilt brass hands and is signed by the Paris retailer Constantin Louis Detouche, Rue Saint-Martin.

Constantin Louis Detouche was a very fine clockmaker and retailer who had close ties with both Jacques Francois Houdin and Houdin's son-in-law the great Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin. Detouche is first listed as working in Rue de Venise, Paris, in 1820 then in 1825 he moved to Rue Saint-Martin where it appears he stayed until 1890.

Both the front and rear bezels are glazed with bevelled glass, the movement can be seen through the rear door.

The French movement is of very high quality as one would expect of Japy Freres. It has both the Japy Freres and the C. Detouche marks on the movement backplate. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully serviced by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days on one wind and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Click the video clip below to hear the bell and watch the clock running!

Condition of the case is very with clean and bright finish, there is some minor wear to the original gilding and some slight discolouration. The porcelain is in excellent condition with no damage and the vast majority of the over-glaze gilt decoration present. Two of the dial half hour markers are missing. The is a fine and very decorative clock to add to your collection.

Complete with pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
