Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Sugar tongs emerged in the early eighteenth century alongside the rising popularity of tea drinking in Britain. Initially crafted as scissor-like nips, they evolved by the late eighteenth and early twentieth centuries into spring-driven bow tongs designed to lift sugar cubes cleanly at formal tea tables.

High-grade sterling silver, containing 92.5 percent pure silver alloyed with copper for durability, was the standard material for fine sugar tongs. Silver-plated base metals such as electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) were also widely produced during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as an alternative.

Authentic British sterling silver items feature official hallmarks struck by an assay office, such as the crown symbol for Sheffield. These marks typically include a makers mark, a purity mark like the lion passant, and a specific date letter identifying the year of manufacture.

Silver sugar tongs can be integrated into contemporary dining settings as functional serving utensils for sugar bowls or cocktail garnishes. Alternatively, they can be displayed on a sideboard tray alongside other hallmarked silver tableware to create a curated focal point.

Silver flatware should be washed gently in warm water with mild soap and dried immediately with a soft cloth to prevent water spots. Tarnish can be removed using a non-abrasive silver polishing cloth or specialised silver cream, avoiding harsh chemicals that may strip delicate surface detailing.
