A Large Imperial Russian Solid Silver Enamel Champleve Spoon - Ivan Khlebnikov

19th century
Description

We are delighted to offer this stunning Imperial Russian 'champlevé' silver enamel spoon made by the sought after Ivan Khelbnikov, Moscow 1887 - Assay Master: Viktor Vasilyevich Savinsky.

Ivan Khlebnikov was one of the top makers among the ranks of Fabergé and Ovchinnikov, evident by the imperial warrant held by them. Such high regard for his works is indeed very apparent even on a single spoon.

This spoon is rather large (serving size) allowing for an opulent amount of embellishment to be displayed: The reverse side of the spoon features a stunning 'Champlevé' enamel design in which the silver is engraved and enamel is 'filled in' resulting in a smooth finish (unlike cloisonne which is protruding).

The blue, white, red and green enamels are contrasted with fine stippling on silver-gilt; the overall design has a wonderful geometric proportion with scrolling motifs.

The entire spoon is gilt (slightly faded due to age) and features a twisted handle design. The spoon displays an excellent array of the finest Imperial Russian craftsmanship in such a 'simple' object as a spoon.

The gauge of the silver in hand feels exceptional with the intricacy of the enamelling evermore apparent in person. The spoon is marked with Khlebnikov's maker's mark, imperial warrant, Moscow town mark, 84 Zolotniks and the assay master mark.
