Fine Louis Japy Gilt Bronze Ormolu Rococo Table Clock

19th century
Description

~ French - Circa 1880 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A very fine and substantial gilt bronze table clock by the esteemed case maker Charles Hour and by clockmaker Louis Japy. It is of the the highest quality, beautifully modelled and finished in glorious ormolu (finely gilded bronze or doré bronze). It is of balloon form with bold scrolls and acanthus swags. To the top a large rococo flourish.

The large dial is enamel on copper and is complete with it's original finely fretted gilt brass hands and convex bezel.

The French movement is of high quality and has the makers mark on the movement backplate of Louis Japy. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker and thoroughly tested before presenting it for sale. Pendulum is an old replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock, please ask and we will send you a link.

Condition of the case is excellent, beautifully clean and bright with hardly any wear or discolouration and there are no losses. The dial is also in excellent condition just some tiny nibbles next to the winding holes.

The clock is marked on the movement back plate for the case maker / retailer Charles Hour of Paris. The movement is marked for the clockmaker Louis Japy.

Charles Hour is listed in Tardy, Dictionnaire Des Horloges. Charles Victor Hour was one of the co-founders of HOUR LAVIGNE which still produces some of the finest and most spectacular clocks today. He began as an apprentice at 11 years of age and Twenty years later he bought out a failing manufacture. In 1891 took on an associate - Diette. Together they became one of the most important clock makers in France. Hour then associated himself with Maurice Lavigne and by the end of the nineteenth century Hour Lavigne was the largest clock and timepiece manufacturer in France with over 800 employees.

An 18th century clock of similar design can be found on page 99 of 'Les plus belle pendule francaises' by Giacomo and Aurelie Wannenes.
