1940s Motor Racing Chronograph Pocket Watch

Vintage motor racing chronograph pocket watch.

The watch has a stem-winding movement, believed to be a Valjoux 61, which is working nicely. This movement was in production from 1932 until the early 1960s. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch measures 49mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is chrome plated and the hinged case back is lightly patterned with vertical lines. The case is in good condition with just light surface marks.

The watch glass has a little light marking but again, not too detrimental.

The dial is in its original finish with unusually stylised numerals, Breguet style hands in a blued steel finish and two subsidiary dials… one for constant seconds and the other records up to 30 minutes. The dial is marked ‘kilomètres à l'heure’ which suggests motor sport usage, and this is confirmed by a very similar example from 1950 which was engraved with details of the 1950 Le Mans 24 hour race, so we can be confident it was intended for motor racing purposes.
