19th Century English oak desk having a makers label of G. Bartholomew & Co, Finsbury London.
A sturdy partners desk with old tooled red leather writing surface on top surrounded by a large moulded border. Three reeded drawers in the frieze, supported by shaped brackets. Pedestals contain shelf space, drawers and cupboards to both sides. Supported on a plinth base. Having original brass knobs on all drawers.
George Bartholomew & Co. (1850-1882) were furniture makers and upholsterers, established by William Bartholomew. The Furniture Gazette of 1873 described details of their stock; including drawing room and dining room furniture in styles of medieval, renaissance, early English and gothic. They participated in various London exhibitions.
A very unusual desk, the style we have not seen before, would look very stylish dressed with books and items.
