Description

A child's Regency beechwood deportment chair, the back with two carved back-rails over a cane seat and raised on out-swept turned legs joined by stretchers.

A charming chair with traces of original paint, the turned front stretchers are beautifully worn from years of use.

Correction or deportment chairs are also known as Astley Cooper Chairs (Sir Astley Paston Cooper 1768-1841). Sir Astley, a surgeon and anatomist, designed these chairs in order to correct faulty posture in children.
