Description

A decorative watercolour portrait of the Cumaean Sibylla, 19th century, after Domenico Zampieri. The theme of the Cumaean Sibylla was used by the Bolognese Domenichino and was a common trope favoured by the patrons in Rome. She is featured in Michelangelo's frescoes in the Sistine Chapel and in Raphael's frescoes in Santa Maria della Pace. The original oil painting by Zampieri is mentioned in the inventory from 1641 and the list of 1697, and it assigns the work to Domenichino. The frame on this watercolour is not the original one. It has a leather back with an easel stand. A very decorative painting.
