Description

Woven on a goat-hair warp and ivory cotton weft structure, with a stylised knotted-pile flower in the centre; a small 'eye' in the neck for warding off evil spirits and a single knotted-pile 'eye' on the back, this is a very rare and extremely unusual namakdan (salt-bag).

Woven by Bakhtiari nomads in the Chahar Mahal region of western Persia around 1900, the bag has a woollen parallel interlacing border design and a knotted-pile base for resilience.

A fabulous bag with a rare simplistic design.
