17th century
Description

Rare 17th Century Carved Oak Fertility / Aphrodisiac Panel of a Mandrake with a love apple surrounded by curling tendrils with two small beasts of evil spirits. The round fruits of the Mandrake / Mandragora, once known as “love apples,” ripen to a pale yellow in May, and develop a bewitching fragrance. Here is a little history of the Mandrake which is renowned to be one of the scariest plants. You may know the Mandrake from the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The mandrake has centuries old history as one of the most important and powerful plants in witchcraft, sorcery and herbal medicine. As well as a primary component of Magical potions. Witches applied or ingested these ointments to help them fly to gatherings with other witches or meet the devil. Over centuries legends surrounding the mandrake referred to the plant with a human body. It was believed to exercise control over the human body, induce love, conception and bring fortune wealth and power.
