Aramis Antiques has dated this piece to the 1890s.
The steel is stamped CAST STEEL and the knife blade is forged in old steel and stamped with makers name FRANCIS H HARDY Sheffield. The blade is fine and sharp and the restrainer on the fork fits tightly and works perfectly. The horn handles bear the natural olive and ivory tones of this material, and the steel and knife show interesting variation in those colours. The set is in its original walnut box, with a blank brass shield, and is lined in burgundy ruched and plain silk, with red velvet rests for the tips of the implements. In excellent condition, this set would look stunning in the dining room and make a beautiful gift too.
