Description

A beautiful pair of late Victorian silver candlesticks with hallmarks for London 1899 and makers mark for Thomas Bradbury &Sons. The hallmarks appear on one side of the base, also on the sconces. The bases are also silver, a mark of high quality, with a central circle of baize, and they have also been hallmarked with the lion passant and makers mark. These candlesticks show the refined Edwardian style coming into fashion at the end of the Victorian era. Mounted on square base with two stepped bands of scallop decoration, with shell decoration at the corners, the columns are decorated with ribbon and swag decoration, with hanging bell ropes between each swag. The sconces have beaded edges and fit perfectly. The quality and workmanship is superb. (At some point there has been a slight dink to the lip of the candleholder on one of the candlesticks but it is hidden under the sconce, and reflects the age of the piece without any detrimental effect).
