Japy Frères Ormolu and Porcelain Oriental Antique French Clock

19th century
Description

~ French - Circa 1870 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A rare and wonderful clock in the French oriental style. Beautifully made in ormolu (finely gilded bronze) and mounted with exquisitely decorated porcelain with a silver ground. The dial panel features a couple relaxing in a garden, she has a parasol, and they are surrounded by white, yellow and pink cherry blossom.

The curved side panels also feature the couple, she is dressed in fine clothes and he carries song birds in a wooden cage. Small panels have scenes of distant mountains framed by cherry blossom and a large urn to the top is also decorated with blossom. The case is decorated with stylised cherry branches forming the urn handles and the feet of the clock. Elephants masks are fitted to the sides. The dial is signed for the Brighton retailer Thomas Boxell and this is repeated on the movement backplate. Please note that this type of clock does not have a rear door or a glazed bezel.

The French movement is by Japy Frères and is of the makers usual high quality. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock running, please ask and we will send a link.

Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is very good, there are some areas of wear, marks and tarnish. Porcelain is excellent with only minor wear and the occasional mark.

Thomas Boxell (1823-1885)
