Description
An extremely fine and detailed bronze cast from a model by Giovanni Battista Amendola (1848-1887). He studied in Naples at the Academy of Fine Arts. Much of his work is still to be seen in Naples, including a statue of Joachim Murat for the façade of the Royal Palace, He later moved to England and executed several commissions for the great Neo-classical artists such as Lord Leighton and Sir Laurence Alma Tadema and indeed Tadema painted a portrait of Amendola at work in his studio. This work is modeled on the work ' Wedded ' by Sir Frederick Lord Leighton PRA and depicts a young couple after their wedding. The woman is apparently based on studies Leighton made in Damascus of a Greek girl whose beauty captivated him. Finely detailed with excellent dark brown patination. The circular base bears the inscription.......' Modeled by G.B.Amendola from the picture of Sir Fredeick Leighton'
