Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An escritoire, also known as a secretaire or bureau a abattant, is a French writing cabinet equipped with a hinged fall-front panel that drops down to create a flat writing surface, revealing interior drawers and pigeonholes.

Traditional French escritoires are constructed using high-grade hardwoods like oak or pine for the carcass, finished with decorative wood veneers such as kingwood, tulipwood, or rosewood. They frequently incorporate marble tops, leather writing surfaces, and cast gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, original iron locks, hand-finished parquetry or marquetry, and heavy cast-bronze mounts with hand-chiselled detailing. The underside and back boards typically show hand-sawn tool marks consistent with historic manufacturing techniques.

An escritoire serves as a functional focal point in a home office, hallway, or living area. Its compact vertical profile makes it ideal for smaller spaces, while its concealed compartments allow modern technology and stationery to be neatly hidden when not in use.

Maintain wood veneers by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer warping, colour fading, or marble cracking, and clean the leather surface with a specialised leather conditioner.
