In A Nutshell Antiques and Interiors has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
The painting is on canvas and is framed in a thick rosewood frame.
On the reverse is a hand written note inscribed in 1924 by Cameron Stewart; "William Stewart. Boot & Shoemaker, High Street, Pawley. Portrait painted about 1842 after death of his wife. Painted by J K Hunter, Artist & Shoemaker [1798-1846]. David Stewart, his son aged about five years, was also painted at the same time. Frames made by Archibald Stewart, brother of above William, the maker of the Wonderful Masonic Table. Table now in possession of John Stewart. Portrait of boy [my father] in possession of James Stewart".
It measures approximately 21" (53cm) high x 17" (43cm) wide including the frame.
The painting is in good original condition. There are signs of age, some surface marks and some crackling of the varnish in places but overall it displays well. There are some losses and small damages around the frame but it has a good aged look. The painting has been lightly cleaned and is ready to hang.
