A fine and rare 17th-century William and Mary period olive oyster lace box of perfect proportions. 1680-1700, England

The cross-grain moulded top is entirely covered in well-placed oyster of olive in geometric patterns, inlaid with a central motif and quadrants, opening to a framed interior of olive and baized lined. Similarly, the cross-grain moulded frieze is veneered in figured olive.

The box is in superb condition and of good colour, mellowing over centuries to a lovely patinated finish.

A William and Mary lace box is a shallow wooden storage chest originating from late seventeenth-century England, primarily designed to store delicate textiles, lace, and personal papers. These boxes often feature decorative marquetry or oyster veneering popularised during the reign of King William III and Queen Mary II.

Oyster veneering was achieved by slicing small branches or roots of timber, such as olive, walnut, or laburnum, crosswise at an angle. These transverse cuts revealed concentric tree ring patterns, which craftsmen arranged in repeating geometric or floral roundels secured onto a solid timber carcase using animal hide glue.
