Description

A pair of Victorian walnut and burr maple decorative salon chairs with Aesthetic Movement design features, dating to c1870.

The chairs have elaborate carved backs, fluted legs, original front castors and a central upholstered back panel. But the entire theme is for each part to have a central burr maple panel contained within a boxwood line inlay and an outer crossbanded walnut surround. Within the burr maple panels is further inlaid decoration - for example at the top of the legs is a foliage square inlaid with ebony and ivorine flowers. The front seat panel has a geometric inland cross with inlaid harebell decoration either side. The back is arched with round and oblong panels of different colour maple. The legs are fluted and decoratively ebonised and inlaid. The workmanship and effort put into these chairs is outstanding - they must have taken a long time to make. The upholstery is beige velvet in pretty good acceptable condition. The condition of the chair frames is fabulous. Decorative, interesting, rare and attractive pieces.
