Description
Please see my stock page for one of, if not THE largest range of jewellery boxes and writing boxes. Very attractive inlaid flame mahogany box in very fine condition. Excellent grain. Inlaid contrasting strips to the top, front and both sides typical of the period. Original inlaid bone escutcheon. Original ornate side hoop handles. What is quite possibly the original robust brass ball feet. The handles and feet have not been cleaned to a bright lustre as the patina certainly adds to the character, has taken many a year to attain the patina and would be a pity to destroy. There is a piece of replaced veneer to the back right corner of the top that was either done many years ago or alternatively done by an extremely skilled restorer as it notices far less than the photographs may suggest. The box is of very sturdy construction. All edges are keen. Base ‘plinth’ is in excellent condition. Original lock and assumed hinges. The key shown is for decorative purposes only though the lock mechanism has been tested and is mechanical sound. Original solid mahogany removable tray with hand cut dovetailed joints and all original dividers present. The lid interior and storage section beneath the tray features what is probably the original leather lining throughout. The colour, grain is of the type seen on many boxes of the period and earlier. There are of course a few minor marks but in terms of wear it is primarily along some of the upper edges of the base….the expected spots caused by removal/replacement of the tray. I think it fair to state that the leather is in FAR better condition that expected for a box of such age and it should be good for many generations to come. Written in pencil on the base is ‘James Porteus (?) Joiner. Maker. March 24th 1837’. It is impossible to state with certainty whether that is the name of the maker or if added at a later date…..I like to believe it to be true……Either way it is a fine looking box in quite remarkable condition and one that is well suited for modern day usage.
