Description

An interesting and fine quality late 19thc bulldog head walking stick or cane, c1880. Certainly made of a hardwood, the wood is most akin to a faded rosewood but might also be hazel or cherry. The bulldog head is finely carved with glass eyes and most little teeth present. At 15cms down the shaft is a press button which might once have operated a lifting tongue in the dog’s mouth - or some other trick - there is no separate tongue in the mouth. The shaft is notched, similar to a hazel branch. The stick has a brass collar. The brass tip is missing. Except for that, the condition is excellent and it is a lovely tactile piece.
