Aramis Antiques has dated this piece to the 1880s.
The bulldog head is finely carved with glass eyes and most little teeth present. At 15cms down the shaft is a press button which might once have operated a lifting tongue in the dog’s mouth - or some other trick - there is no separate tongue in the mouth. The shaft is notched, similar to a hazel branch. The stick has a brass collar. The brass tip is missing. Except for that, the condition is excellent and it is a lovely tactile piece.
