Coastal Scene Oil Painting By David Payne (1843-1894)

A fine and charming oil on board by Scottish artist David Payne (1843-1894). The painting is wonderfully detailed in the figures on the beach, the boat and cottage, and yet free and loose in the rendering of the sky. The whole has a great feeling of place and time and is a lovely example of the artist’s work. The painting has been professionally cleaned and is in excellent condition. The signature is located to the bottom left, there is apparently no date. The painting is framed in the original gilt frame which has had some minor repairs. The whole has a great period look and is ready to hang. C.1880
 
David Payne (1843-1894), was born in Annan in Dumfriesshire the son of a Mason. He initially made his living as a house painter before becoming an artist. Payne moved to Derby in 1869 where he became a student of George Turner ''Derbyshire''s John Constable''. Payne became a rural landscape and trompe l''oeil artist.
