Oil Portrait Of A Soldier By Harry Thubron (1915-1985)
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:Prometheus Antiques
A wonderful oil on canvas portrait of a soldier by Harry Thubron (1915-1985). The painting is superbly worked in thick impasto oils with brush and palette knife. The soldier in uniform has a great charm to his expression with a cigarette just hanging from his lips. The painting is signed and dated 1941 and thus dates from the artist’s early period. The whole has been professionally cleaned and is in excellent condition. The frame is modern with a grey painted finish that works well with the tone of the piece.
Harry Thubron is known as a great modern British artist but also a hugely influential teacher. He trained at the Sunderland School of Art, 1933-38 and then the Royal College of Art 1938-40. His extensive and distinguished teaching career included Leeds College of Art, 1955-64 and Leicester College of Art, 1966-68, where he was head of the painting school. He taught part-time at Goldsmith''s School of Art from the early 1970s. Amongst his solo exhibitions were Peterloo Gallery,... Manchester, 1976, and retrospectives at St Paul''s Gallery, Leeds, 1985 and Goldsmiths'' College Gallery, 1986. Originally a figurative artist as the piece here can attest, Thubron moved towards abstraction from the 60’s. He worked with resins, wood and metal until the mid-1960s and then primarily worked in collages, examples of this abstract work are highly desirable and both The Arts Council and British Council have examples.
The painting is a highly decorative mid-century portrait from an interesting and influential modern British artist.
Overall sizes in inches, including frame: 17 ¾ by 20
