Antique Pillow-bag Face (Balisht), Baluch Tribes, Ferdows, South-east Persia.

1900 - 1920
Description

Two subservient tribal women dominate the terracotta ground of this charming pillow-bag face, made by Baluch nomads in the Ferdows region of south-east Persia around 1900 - 1910.

My experience of living amongst two tribal groups in the 1970s and subsequent forays into other tribes in the 1990s, certainly made me realise that women were not in any way subservient but decision makers within their tribal groups.

Originally having a plain-weave back which has been lost or damaged through use, the knotted-pile face that remains, is in excellent condition. The remains of the brocaded ends can be seen and in the lower right side of the field, a natural green 'tree of life' rises upwards from the underworld through the earthly world to the spiritual realms.

This balisht has hung on our wall for many years; is illustrated in my third edition 'Tribal Rugs - Treasures of the Black Tent' page 123 and now it is time for some other very lucky person out there to enjoy it as much as we have!

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
