Tinker & Toad has dated this piece to the Victorian era.
The upper gallery having six graduated drawers with a central cubby box and inset feature bookshelf. Below sit a row of six pigeon holes above the desk area which the cabinet maker has finished with an attractive stepped lip.
The lower section holding two banks of five graduated drawers separated by a large centre drawer. A lovely feature of the desk are the rear panelled doors which enclose two adjustable shelves. The desk stands on inset castors to its base which would have allowed the desk to go against a wall and rotated easily for cupboard access or perhaps to hide the church silver! The piece is nicely finished with attractive escutcheons and handles in the Gothic or Aesthetic taste. The upper section and lip is removable.
An extremely handsome and well made piece of English antique furniture seldom found. The photos are of poor quality and do not do the desk justice as our usual photography flash bulbs had failed so we tried our best with both poor natural and flourescent lighting.
The kneehole measure 64 square and the desk height is 81.5 cm.
