Early Nineteenth Century English Coastal scene. In the Walker Art Gallery Liverpool is housed the Danson Collection of Paintings by Charles Towne 1763-1840. No 34 plate 7 listed in the Walker Art Gallery catalogue of Oct-Nov 1977 is "Coast scene with shipping: drovers and cattle by ruins near a port". This view is very similar to the painting we offer here which is on panel. It has in the past be verified by the previous private owner as being by Charles Towne by Christies Auction House
Towne was much influenced in his animal paintings by Stubbs and in his landscapes by George Morland with whom he was acquainted whilst living in London. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1799.
In an advert placed in a Liverpool Newspaper in January 1813 where he was then living he classed himself as an "Animal -Portrait, Pastoral and Landscape Painter". He offers his services to the Nobility and Gentry for, "the Art of Transferring. Cleaning. Repairing and Restoring Fine old Paintings which from neglect, damp, or other causes, are divested of their original Richness and Brilliance of Colour "
This painting measures 30cm wide x 23cm high. The original C19th gilt frame measures 51cm wide x 44 cm high.
