1920s Thiel Pocket Watch and Chain

1920s Thiel pocket watch and chain.

The watch has a seven jewel stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is signed with the name Thiel, from the company Gebrüder Thiel GmbH (or Thiel Brothers).

The company was founded in 1862 and originally manufactured small pipe fittings. They soon progressed into manufacturing other small metalwork items, including pocket watches. The company continued to expand and production increased until the outbreak of the First World War when the company changed its production to national defence. After the War, production of pocket and wrist watches increased again, until the 1930s when once again their attention turned to military items once more.

The watch measures 49mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is nickel and it has the odd mark and surface scratch but overall is very acceptable for a 1920s piece. Nice engine turned detail to the hinged case back, and a central vacant cartouche.

The acrylic lens is in good condition.

The dial has a short hairline to the edge, covered by the bezel, but otherwise is in good condition.

The watch comes with a single chain, 33cm long including the T-bar and the clasp. Also included is a fob with the registered design number 289343 which dates it to 1897. There are also traces of marks, probably maker’s marks, but difficult to read.

The watch and chain come in a new presentation box.
