A North Oxfordshire, Quaker Made, 'hoop & Spike' Wall Clock Probably By Gilkes. Circa 1740
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:M. C. Taylor
This is an excellent example, almost certainly made by a member of the Gilkes family.
The exposed, thirty hour duration, posted movement with seconds beating, Anchor Recoil escapement and countwheel striking the hours on a top-mounted bell. The plates and rectangular section posts are constructed from iron and the lower ''spikes'' are integral to the rear posts. Being chain driven and having a cast lead weight.
Behind a 9'' square brass dial plate with cast brass ''Indian''s head'' corner spandrels, a plain silvered chapter ring with large Roman hour numerals and an inner quarter track and the centre being decorated with geometric circles produced by ''Wriggle work''. The single blued steel hand is pierced.
This well-made and attractive example is absolutely typical of a Gilkes Hoop and spike clock, it is without doubt Quaker made and from the area of North Oxfordshire. These clocks and their makers are extremely well documented and information is easily found on the internet ...also, many reference books have been written on the subject. Decoration was kept to a minimum and the ''Wriggle work'' is a form of hand engraving that could usually be carried out by the maker instead of employing the skills of an engraver.
This clock is in excellent and original condition, working very well and recently restored.
The purchased item can be collected at a time mutually agreed, or alternatively delivery can be arranged, for which we are happy to provide a quotation.
