A Very Large Mahogany, English Drop-dial Fusee Wall Clock By Anthony Furnace Of Keswick In Cumbria. Circa 1870
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:M. C. Taylor
This is an imposing and attractive example in fine and original condition.
The eight day duration, chain fusee movement with Dead-beat escapement and Harrison maintaining power. Also having shouldered plates and long pendulum.
Behind an 18'' diameter, flat painted iron dial with an outer minute track and triangular hour markings, large Roman hour numerals and the maker''s signature of ''A(nthony) FURNACE (of) KESWICK'' above and below the centre. The substantial matching steel hands are of ''spear and spade'' style and the cast brass glazed and hinged bezel has a silvered sight ring.
The well-figured mahogany case being of good colour and patina has an ornately turned dial surround and a flame veneered trunk that has a recessed and moulded centre panel with a conforming top curve and hand carved ''ears'' of acanthus floral scroll style. There is a further moulding that separates the trunk from the chisel bottom also with a recessed panel and a locking door.
Anthony Furnace... worked from Cockermouth from 1848 until 1858. He then moved to Keswick where he worked until 1879.
The price is for the clock in present, good working order. It has been well-maintained. It would however benefit from a clean and service. No attention is required to the case but if preferred, the dial would be improved with re-inking to the worn areas. Any restoration work that you require will be subject to a further cost and waiting time, which can be discussed upon enquiry.
The purchased item can be collected at a time mutually agreed or if required, delivery can be arranged for which we are happy to provide a quotation.
