Mellier & Co
A late 19th century, French, ormolu mounted parquetry inlaid desk after Jean-Henri Reisner by Mellier & co. In the Louis XVI style, the raised superstructure topped with marble & a pierced gallery, above pigeon holes flanked by small drawers. The base with a replaced leather writing surface, above three frieze drawers and standing on four square tapering legs, ending in ormolu sabots. Pencil inscription to the interior ‘Manufactured 1885’.
French born, Charles Mellier moved to England, worked for, and eventually took over the illustrious Aglo-French cabinet makers Monbro and Company, circa 1880. Working from Frith Street and later Margaret Street, he soon became a major force in designing and making furniture, and executing grand decorative schemes. The company furnished the great cross-Atlantic liner Mauretania and exhibited at the 1904 International Exhibition in St Louis.
