We are delighted to offer this superb large and engraved solid silver Victorian snuff box made by Edward Smith, Birmingham 1850.

Impressive in size and weight, the snuff box is an exemplary piece of fine Victorian craftsmanship. In addition to its large and striking presence, the intricacy of the engravings and engine-turned motifs are magnificent.

Each side of the box is profusely hand-engraved with Acanthus scrolls, geometric engine-turned embellishments and angular lines.

As further testament to the care taken in crafting such a beautiful object, the bottom panel of the box is the most decorated despite the fact that it will be not visible when placed upon a table.

The lid features a large unengraved cartouche.

Interior-wise the box exhibits a lustrous gilt colour which excellently contrasts the exterior silver sparkle.

Whislt originally such boxes were made to store snuff (powdered tobacco), due to its beauty and size, it may also be used as a piece of intricate interior decor, practical storage for pills/medicine or as a small jewellery box.

The box is fully hallmarked with the maker's mark, date mark, lion passant, Victorian head and the Birmingham assay mark.

A remarkable piece of hand-engraved collectable silverware from the Victorian period remaining in excellent condition.
