A Victorian Solid Silver Basket with Floral Chasing - William Morton & Sons 1898

19th century
Description

This wonderful Victorian solid silver basket was made by silversmith William Morton & Sons of Sheffield in 1898.

The basket features intricate floral chasing on the interior with an alternating background between plain and stippled sections that cover the sides of the basket, leaving the centre to be unembellished.

The handle of the basket features a collapsible swing handle with a dual-banded structure with three beads in between the two bands.

The bowl of the basket has flared sides with a practical amount of space, ideal for holding flowers, fruits or berries on your dining table or as part of your interior decor.

Four beaded feet support the basket and raise the entire profile by a slight amount.

Solid silver baskets were traditionally used by servants who would carry food to serve the owners of wealthy households, however, later on, such baskets were often also used to hold flowers as the 'flower girls'/'junior bridesmaids' would scatter the petals in a celebratory manner.

Full set of English hallmarks are clearly marked on the interior of the basket.

An attractive, ornate and practical piece of English antique silverware - ideal for multiple practical uses such as interior decoration with flowers or as an indulging manner to enjoy some fruits/cakes/berries of your choice.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
