Early 19thc Sampler by Mary Ann Chapman C1820

18th century
Description

An early 19thc Georgian needlework sampler by Mary Ann Chapman c1820.It has a fine beige linen back cloth onto which Mary Ann stitched four versions of the alphabet and an inscription - Let me be wise in youth O Lord so I may safe tread the way I ought to go Lead me and learn me what is right and just For in thy help my God I put my trust.

Charmingly the X seems to have been forgotten in the first alphabet line.

The sampler has a foliage border and is infilled with urns, plants and trees. The colours are amber beige and petrol blue.

Mary Ann has stitched her name and date in but the last two numerals are difficult to read. I put them at 1823 but it could be a bit earlier or later, from the age and style of the work.

This sampler was in an inferior frame, so I have reframed it to pick out the petrol

blue colour. The condition is excellent for its age, the only drawback being the slightly unclear date. A wonderful piece connecting us to the maker.

The panel size is 40cmH x 43cmW

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
