Description

I acquired this stunning and beautiful small weaving from Iran recently and told it was a 'balisht' or pillow-bag! On its arrival, I was convinced it was more a small 'tubreh' or storage-bag which had been opened up to display the piece in its full beauty. What led me to this decision was that I noticed a very slight horizontal fold in the centre and came to the conclusion that it was originally a tubreh which had been opened up. There was certainly no evidence of it once having a flat-woven back and, if it was a balisht, then the ends would have been finished differently!

Gorgeous as it is opened up, this handsome soumak weaving was made by Afshar nomads in Kerman Province circa 1870-1880.
