Description

Antique Caucasian rugs are often admired for their exceptional colouring. This piece fits the bill well. It is a lovely piece with happy colours, a well drawn field with repeating Memling guls, and a delightful saffron yellow border decorated with abstracted bird-like ornaments. The overall appearance is harmonious and elegant. The wool is fine and all the dyes are natural and beautiful. There is some wear and the brown has corroded in places which gives the rug an elusive lived-in look. Professionally cleaned and restored. Woven in the Moghan region of the Eastern Caucasus, this is a wonderful collectible and decorative piece.

Caucasian rugs originate from the Caucasus region between the Black and Caspian Seas, known for bold geometric patterns and vibrant natural dyes. Memling guls are stepped octagonal motifs named after painter Hans Memling, who depicted them in 15th-century artwork.

These carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun sheep wool for both the pile and the foundation. Artisans historically coloured the yarn using natural plant and insect dyes, resulting in rich, enduring tones.

Authentic 19th-century pieces feature hand-knotted wool foundations, slight irregularities in pattern symmetry (abrash), and hand-bound selvedges. The reverse side reveals distinct, tightly hand-tied knots with natural colour variations typical of organic dyes.

A geometric tribal carpet provides grounding contrast against contemporary neutral furniture or dark wood flooring. Positioning a long runner in a hallway or entryway draws the eye forward while adding rich texture and historic character.
