Description

The stunning madder-red ground of this gorgeous little Turkmen wedding rug, made circa 1850, contains three vertical rows of eight Teke guls (tribal crests), beautifully balanced.

The wool quality is soft and glossy and the rug retains its long flat-woven skirts at each end - a rare occurrence in rugs of this age. As wedding rugs were highly-prized possessions and very finely knotted, they represented the quality of work that the young Turkmen bride could achieve and how valuable she was to her future husband! As a wedding rug, the bride and groom would stand on it, at the wedding ceremony and take their marriage vows. The rug would then be presented to her future husband, along with the rest of her dowry, and never with any intention of selling unless the family hit extremely hard times.

This is a fabulous example in excellent condition.
