We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Ashford Black Marble is a fine dark limestone quarried in Derbyshire, England, which was heavily utilized during the 19th century. Local craftspeople developed a specialized lapidary industry, crafting decorative panels by inlaying contrasting regional and imported specimen marbles into the dark base using techniques inspired by Italian pietra dura.

These panels typically feature a foundation of polished black limestone or marble inlaid with various coloured stones such as malachite, lapis lazuli, jasper, fluorspar, and exotic marbles, often secured within carved wooden or gilt metal frames.

Authentic pieces feature dense, deep-black native Derbyshire limestone with precision-fitted stone inlays displaying natural mineral veins. Antique examples often show minor historical surface wear, hand-cut stone geometric or floral motifs, and period-correct backing or framing.

Small specimen marble panels work effectively when integrated into a curated gallery wall or displayed on an easel atop a console table or desk. The contrast between the dark polished stone and gilt framing complements both traditional dark wood interiors and minimalist modern settings.

Dust the marble surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive sprays that can etch natural stone. Keep the item in a stable climate away from moisture, and handle the frame with care to protect gold leaf or gilding.
