Extensive Victorian Child’s Toy Dinner Service

19th century
Description

A charming and interesting child's toy miniature dinner service. The set bears the 'Indian Stone China' impressed mark of Charles Meigh and sons a Staffordshire pottery making stone china similar to Masons. The set is quite large with tureens and meat plates etc. The condition overall is very good, there is the odd chip, glaze crazing and hairline crack but very few. This is a rare early and extensive set of its type and I have not seen one by this maker in this stone china body. C.1850.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Victorian era, miniature dinner services were created as educational toys for children of wealthy families, designed to teach table manners, meal service etiquette, and hosting skills.

These miniature sets were predominantly manufactured from soft-paste porcelain, hard-paste porcelain, fine earthenware, or bone china, often finished with hand-painted gold leaf or transferware decoration.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit slight hand-finished irregularities, makers marks underneath the base, natural wear patterns along gilded rims, and proportioned detailing matching full-scale Victorian ceramic production methods.

Miniature china sets can be displayed inside glass-fronted wall cabinets, arranged symmetrically on a sideboard top, or grouped on bookshelf tiers as decorative vignette pieces.

Clean gilded ceramics using a soft brush or microfibre cloth with lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding abrasive sponges, harsh chemical cleansers, and prolonged submersion that could strip the delicate gold surface.
