The footboard is carved with a shell flanked by angels and the feet form part of a mythical beast. The seat is joined by a turned stretcher underneath.

A sgabello is a type of stool typical of the Italian Renaissance and often associated with Venice. Its name derives from the word scabellum (Latin for ‘stool’). They were usually placed in halls, often featuring the family’s coat of arms alongside elaborately carved mythical beasts and grotesques and as such were not designed for comfort but rather to impress important guests. Often later chairs are copies of original 16th century designs.
